Myths & Misconceptions About Bariatric Surgery

With Weight Loss Surgery, the pounds might come off immediately. But the weight will not stay off without commitment, hard work and support. But don’t worry, we’re here to help.

Here are some common questions about Bariatric Surgery.

Do you accept my insurance?

Einstein Bariatrics accepts all insurance payments. However, the only way to be certain about insurance coverage is to request an explanation of benefits.
If your insurance company does not cover bariatric surgery, but you and your surgeon believe that you are a candidate, you have the option to pay on your own.
Einstein Bariatrics can reach out to your insurer to determine your coverage eligibility, if there are any limitations, and what your co-payments might be.

Will I be in pain after my surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is surgery, no matter how you look at it. So people might experience post-surgical pain. Good news? While some do experience discomfort, most are walking and drinking the same day as their surgery.

Will I still be hungry after getting bariatric surgery?

Yes, eventually. We’ll work with you to create a Phased Diet post-surgery, that allows you to ween certain liquids and foods back into your everyday routine. You won’t crave much sugar, and it will take less food for you to feel “full”.

Will my stomach Stretch?

No, it will not. This doesn’t not really happen – even though it is commonly talked about.

Will I need to exercise?

Definitely, exercise is always a must. It helps balance what you eat, break down fats and build up muscle. Exercise should be part of everyone’s lifestyle, no matter your age, gender or weight.

Will I be able to stop or alter my medications?

The team will work with you to manage your medications leading up to your surgery. Post-surgery, you might find you don’t need every medication because your pre-existing conditions have changed, which you’ll talk to your team about during your information session.

What are the expected weight loss results?

On average, our patients lose around 70-80 percent of their excess weight over a two-year period. Weight loss typically happens rapidly in the first six months and then begins to taper off.
Some patients will regain around five to ten percent of their excess weight during the two- to five-year mark.

Will I gain the weight back?

While many Bariatric Surgery patients lose a tremendous amount of weight during the first year, some do put weight back on later. Maintaining and managing a strict diet and exercise plan increases your chances of keeping the weight off in the long run.

Will I need plastic surgery after the procedure?

If you lose a significant amount of weight, you might see a significant amount of excess skin post-surgery. We recommend waiting 18-24 months before having cosmetic surgery to remove the excess skin.

How long is the hospital stay?

80% of patients leave the hospital after spending one night, the rest typically leave after spending two nights in the hospital.
