What was your life like before your Einstein procedure?
My heaviest when I started this process, was 343 pounds. I kept saying “how did this happen?” I felt horrible. I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want to be that statistic where I die of a heart attack, or I die of a stroke or some disease because I could have avoided this. I could have done something about it.
I was not always heavy growing up. Into my 20’s, I still maintained a decent weight. When I got into my 30’s I became more sedentary. At 40 years old, I was concerned with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain, and difficulty breathing. I was one of those people that you see on the street, struggling to walk, or get in and out of a car, or one experience going to an amusement park and literally getting stuck in the ride. I didn’t know that that could happen, and it’s such a realization of the weight is too much. It’s keeping me from living my life. It was literally a light bulb moment where I said, “Something’s not right here.” I felt like I need to change my health and my well-being.
What has your life been like since your Einstein procedure?
I had bariatric surgery almost three years ago now and I’ve maintained my weight loss. The psychological part of this experience has been really a big part of it for me. I knew that doing this was going to affect my health. I didn’t realize at that time it was going to affect my life in general and all the things that I probably would have never done had I not had the surgery. Like swimming lap after lap in the pool, and mountain climbing, and kayaking, and running a 5k, and getting tattoos. Life now is really defined by the tattoo on my right bicep that says, “The journey never ends.”
Do you have any advice for people considering a procedure?
One of the great things about Einstein Bariatrics is when you walk into the information session. You really feel from that point that you have the support of every member of that team. Ever since that day going in there, I knew it was the best thing that I ever did. Because of Einstein Bariatrics I have more hope for my future than I ever thought possible.
